Gottta Love #TeaserTuesday!!
Book One of The Soulkeepers Series: Forbidden
Michael and Sophia work on their astronomy project under the stars . . .
Michael spreads the blanket and reclines on it. When I don’t move, he flashes the light on me. “Lay down, Sophia.” I bristle, consider my options, and find none. Throwing the packet on the ground, I sit on the edge of the blanket—as far away from him as possible—and lay back. The light dies and a million stars pop alive, a glowing canopy clear and bright. I’m in awe.
You never see stars like this in LA, maybe inland in the dessert, but certainly not in the places I’ve lived. It’s surreal.
And quiet. Night noises dissipate as if warned not to disturb us. Tension fades like an echo in the air, and I am heavy on the earth, intoxicated with peace and just being. I can feel Michael’s presence three feet away and I imagine we are the only two people left on earth, and the grassy hill is lifting us up like an offering to the stars, pristine pinpricks in Heaven’s floor.
God is spying on us.
Michael’s breathing is gentle, and the throbbing in my chest matches the slow cadence. The strange pulling sensation I felt at the mud pit returns but it’s faint, like a fish tugging a line. I relax into the body that no longer seems mine and take the rich, earthy aroma into me in deep breaths. It fills me up, leaving almost no room for the questions flying around inside my head.
Almost.
“Relax your mind,” Michael murmurs as though he knows I am working overtime. I look at him. His eyes are lost in the stars and his perfect profile cuts a negative shadow against the midnight sky. Soft blond curls fall away from his forehead, and shade darkens the plane of his cheek. Delicate beauty that lies. Michael is not fragile but strong, demanding, and full of secrets; his temper is the edge of a knife.
He turns his head and looks at me, and my breath freezes in place. His eyes are liquid blue and heavy, with black lashes weighing them down. He blinks slowly like he’s sedated, and it is the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen. My stomach clenches and I tingle deep inside. My blood suddenly throbs in strange, unfamiliar places, and I feel my face grow hot. I am blushing.
Here’s a sneak peek into Haven Hurst, Connecticut, the setting of The Soulkeepers series.
I love quaint little towns, especially when things are never what they appear to be and the unexpected always happens 😀

“You know when you read a book and it’s just so good that you immediately look for anything else by that author to immediately add to your to-be-read list? That was me after reading Forbidden. I was pleasantly surprised to find out this is the first book in Lori Adams’ debut trilogy. With such good writing and characters, I would have expected this story to be from an established author-so again, very pleasantly surprised and glad I requested it from NetGalley.
The characters are well written with excellent depth so that they feel like they could be real people around you. Sophia is a strong young female lead, Michael is the perfect hot good guy, and Dante is a great, sexy, really bad boy that you do feel sad for even though he really is the bad boy. Sophia’s friends and classmates are your usual classic high school roundup of characters (I looked forward to hearing what Duffy’s next outfit would be, and he and Bailey playing off each other were pretty funny).
The world the author has created is fantastic. I thought it was quite original and enjoyed the cast of paranormal characters that were introduced with the Guardian Angels, Demon Knights, Grigori and the others. I have read a few other angel stories before, but none drew me in like this one did.
While this book is labeled as New Adult, it really reads as more mature Young Adult so I wonder if the New Adult label is an indication of where the series will be heading. If that is the case, it will be great to see the characters grow into that category, especially since you can feel the strength and intensity of the attraction between them. This first installment though can be safely read by those mature young adults 14 and up, though no matter what age you are I think you’ll love this book.
Me? I’m impatiently awaiting the next in the series as I can’t wait to see where it goes…a solid 5 star read!
